Having a background in the sciences, and a love for great beer, a Brewmaster position seemed a perfect fit. And, after 20 years, we would have to agree. He has been involved with Capital Brewery since February of 1986 as Assistant Brewmaster, moving up to Head Brewmaster in September 1987. Since then, Kirby has made a name for himself as a world-class lager brewer. Carl Nolen, President of Capital Brewery, has been in the brewing industry for a long time. His appreciation of the business began back in 1978 in the driver's seat of a beer truck, delivering kegs on State Street in Madison, WI. After stops in Golden, Colorado with Coors Brewing Company and 16 years at the distributor end, he took over as President of Capital Brewery in February 2004. He celebrated his inaugeration at Bockfest 2004, and hasn't looked back since. In interviews, when he is asked about his background, Carl often sums it up with "I'm a beer guy." The building that houses our Brew Haus, Bier Stube, Gift Haus, and warehouse space (just west of the Bier Garten) was originally and egg processing plant. A group of people got together that wanted to start a brewery. They started looking for investors and raising money. In March of 1984, Capital Brewery was incorporated. They held a contest to name the beer that Capital Brewery would produce. The winner was Garten Brau. The first beer produced in June 1986 was Capital Brewery Garten Brau Pilsner, which became our current Annual - Special Pilsner. Capital Brewery Garten Brau Dark (currently Munich Dark) was also produced that year. Since then we have dropped the 'Garten Brau' name to reduce confusion, but still hold true to the initial ideals that the founding group set forth. For more information, please visit our Brewery Tour page, or come in for an 'in-person' tour. Year around scheduled tour times are Friday at 3:30PM and Saturday 1:30PM & 3:30PM.
